Earl Grey Tea Is Very Well Symbolized In Popular Culture
There's some mystique with Earl Grey tea. It's exceptional flavor and colorful, mystery shrouded origins make a great story, and it's probably the best known of all English teas, and actually the most widely known tea, period.
Repeated references to the blend in popular culture (generally, music, movies, television, and books), have only boosted the image, and caused the drink even more popular than ever. You don't have to look far to find references to the Earl Grey tea blend, for instance:
Probably the most popular character in American television to drink the tea regularly is none but Captain Jean Luc Picard, of the USS Enterprise (Star Trek, the Next Generation), and it doesn't conclude there. In an episode of Star Trek spinoff, "Deep Space Nine" there's a mention of "That Earl Grey fellow," and teaching him a thing or two about tea leaves, thus Earl Grey in the Star Trek universe is very well represented indeed!
The good Captain is not alone, though. Artimis Fowl (from the novels with his name) has quite a passion for the stuff, as does Sir Leigh Teabing, from the book "The DaVinci Code." And then of course there's John Locke from the TV show "Lost" who asks opponent Benjamin Linus for a cup of the stuff, and the character Hyacinth Bucket from the British sitcom "Keeping up Appearances," intakes the blend in various episodes.
And let's not leave out animation! In the anime series Black Butler, the key character Ciel Phantomhive drinks Earl Grey tea on numerous situations, and the stuff is actually part of the story in a lot of ways.
Music too, has a number of references, ranging from Weird Al Yankovic's "White and Nerdy" number, to Dada's song on their self titled 1997 album called "The Ballad of Earl Grey and Chamomile." You'll also see a chapter identified as "Earl Grey" in Garrison Keillor's "The Book of Guys," and perhaps if you're into playing video games, and invariably be sitting in front of a game called the "Steamboat Chronicles," well then your default Mech in the game is the Earl Grey II, and all this just scratches the surface. What are the other stuff could you name that are so effectively represented?
