Is Anxiety Inherited? An Easy Question, But A Complex Answer.

Is anxiety inherited, what do you think? For me I do not think so. I really feel some of us are born into a lineage where there many of us are dealing with anxiety. But that does not mean that we will have anxiety.

Talking from my individual personal experience my Mother had anxiety and I'm not 100% guaranteed but I believe my dad was a pretty nervous guy. Therefore yes it was in my family. But I have four littermates and none of them suffer from nervousness or panic disorder. I am additionally a Sagittarius and it sounds as if we are prone to be restless people. As a result this may also be a contributing factor.

When I had my first panic attack I did ask my Doctor the question "is anxiety inherited", he was not certain. As far as he was concerned there was no evidence either way. And so I consider there isn't any definitive solution to the problem "is anxiety inherited".

I truly consider that there is no such thing as an anxiety gene within us. I do think that we can pick up on the behaviours of those close to us when we are maturing. So I feel we could have learnt behaviour that is something wholly different to anxiety.

As children we might have observed somebody close to us having an anxiety attack and never in fact understood what was going on. But what we would of picked up, was the anxiety they where feeling. And if it was a close relative who was acting fearful, then we would really be afraid, as we looked to them to keep us safe. However we would not of understood their fear.

So there might be a case for anxiety being a learnt behaviour, but when it comes to the question "is stress inherited", I am not certain. Although it would be really helpful at times to know where my stress came from. And yes when I was feeling down it would of been quite helpful to have someone to blame and be angry with. But again that's merely a part of the process, well it had been for me. The not knowing or not understanding was really terrifying. It would of been helpful for me to have the physician say, yes your anxiety is inherited,at least then I might of least understood my anxiousness better.

What's your opinion? Please give a sensible comment to the query "is anxiety inherited". I would truly value your input.
