While almost everybody has heard the term "Baby Boomer" many may not know exactly who this is or perhaps where it came from. Most agree it that it started to come into use after the book "Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation", by Landon Jones. In the USA, it is usually used to refer to individuals who were born between 1946 and 1964.

In certain other countries who also experienced a blossoming of population rise in the relative peace and prosperity which followed World war 2, the time frame is set a few years earlier or later. Generations that preceded the baby boomers are usually known as the Traditionalists. The following generation is usually called Generation X.

Even the baby boomer generation itself may be subdivided into 2 parts. One group includes those born from 1946 to 1953, along with individuals who were born in 1954 and later in the period known as "Generation Jones." This name probably derives from the author Landon Jones. This group was, of course, after the war in Korea, even though it was a time in which the Cold War developed.

A new name has recently come into use, the "Golden Boomers." This symbolizes the older part of the baby boomer group that is approaching retirement age or who may have taken early retirement before the age of 65. Never has so large a group approached retirement of approximately the same time, and this has large consequences on the needs of an aging population.

You will find a great deal which distinguishes the baby boomers as a group. They represent a time in which youth was idealized and such catch terms developed such as "Never believe an individual over thirty." Obviously this philosophy fell rather flat as boomers attained 30 them-selves. They experienced the worries of the Cold War and the apparently very real chance of nuclear annihilation. They saw human beings touch the beginnings of outer space as well as saw technologies burst at an everlasting pace.

The baby boomer generations are also important for changes in ways of thinking in society. Boomers experienced the fulfillment of the civil rights movement early in their lives and were part of new movements for women's privileges and security of the rights of the handicapped. Attitudes toward American contribution to foreign wars replaced from previous almost automatic support to more questioning of the appropriateness of the task. Improvements in birth control were linked to new viewpoints about human sexuality.

What ever the exact period of time of their birth or any kind of subdivisions or new differences, it is clear that these 76 or so million people born in the after war baby boom have had profound impacts on their world
