YouTube Releases New Analytics Tool - “YouTube Insight”

This from the YouTube blog today:

Whether a YouTube video has 10 views or 10,000,000, people always want to know the same thing: who’s watching this? Where do viewers come from? How did they find my video?

Finally, we have some answers. Today we’re releasing YouTube Insight, a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site. For example, uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time. You can also delve deeper into the lifecycle of your videos, like how long it takes for a video to become popular, and what happens to video views as popularity peaks.

How does this help you? Well, using these metrics, you can increase your videos’ view counts and improve your popularity on the site. For instance, you might learn that your videos are most popular on Wednesdays, that you have a huge following in Spain, or that new videos that play off previous content become more popular more quickly. With this information, you can concentrate on creating compelling new content that appeals to your target audiences, and post these videos on days you know these viewers are on the site. (Maybe even post your next video in Spanish?) And for those of you who are also partners, the more popular a video is, the more advertising revenue it can generate.

We’ll be making new features and additional information available fairly quickly — like a specific breakdown of how viewers discovered the video — so keep an eye out as we roll out new features. As for now, you can find currently available metrics by clicking under the “About this Video” button under “My account > Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos.”

This can be nothing but great news for marketers!

YouTube to Employ Overlay Ads

YouTube LogoCNN reported yesterday that YouTube plans to roll out semi-unobstrusive overlay ads for the first ten seconds of videos, in the bottom section of videos.

If a user opts to click on the overlay ad, the video they are watching automatically pauses and they are taken to the advertisement.

YouTube has stated that they plan to do a revenue split with the video owners, but they have not said how much the split will be.

THE GOOD - possible revenue stream
THE BAD - probably still pretty obtrusive
THE UGLY - No more streaming youtube videos on myspace, as myspace doesn’t allow videos which incorporate commercial gain for the owner. Revver.com anyone?

Back From Vacation!! :D

I had a lovely week in Lake Tahoe and now I’m back and READY TO WORK!

In the spirit of buckling down, then, allow to drop some knowledge on y’all (like how I just went “gangsta marketa” on ya? :D)

Today’s post is about YouTube. Two weeks ago, I spent two solid, focused days uploading videos to YouTube. I have consistently made ten dollars per day from them since then.

That may not sound like a lot, particularly to seasoned marketers that are making SO MUCH MORE than that every day. Believe me, I understand…I make quite a bit more than that every day myself. However, here is what impressed me about my YouTube efforts - it was truly “Set it and Forget it.”

I haven’t done ANYTHING with those videos since I uploaded them.

I haven’t promoted them, I haven’t added friends to the accounts, I haven’t commented anybody, I haven’t gotten backlinks…you get the idea.

And yet I’ve made a consistent ten dollars PER DAY since then ($140 so far), and conceivably will continue to make that for the rest of my life.

That’s a good tip about residual income. Some of you reading this said, “Two whole days’ work for ten dollars? FORGET IT!” But what about now that it’s been two weeks and it’s $140? What about after a year, when it’s $3650? What about after ten years, when I’ve made $36,500? Was the two days of effort worth it then? :D

Not to mention the fact that, now that I know how to make $10/day with this method, I can easily duplicate and leverage that system to make a few hundred dollars a day with a little time and effort.

Ain’t the internet great? :P

I honestly think it’s possible that YouTube might be the TRUE “set it and forget it” method that people have been advertising all this time!

Stay tuned for a free mini-course that will outline all my profit-pulling methods for making money from YouTube. People familiar with my Free Craigslist eCourse know that my favorite way of getting information out there is NOT by writing and selling an ebook - although I do that, too. My absolute favorite way is a free eCourse…I LOVE IT! :D

Facebook Offered 6 Billion!

This isn’t really cutting edge current news, as it happened last week, but I thought that it was an interesting commentary to point out about social networking.

For you marketers out there who poo-poo utilizing social networking or Web 2.0 sites as a viable traffic/visibility strategy, consider that -

- Newscorp bought Myspace for $585 million (amid industry speculation that the number was too low!)
- Google bought YouTube for 1.6 billion
- Now Microsoft has offered Facebook 6 billion…and they’ve turned it down!

Hmmmmm…think these big corporations might be seeing value where you’re not? :D

Web 2.0 in Just Under 5 Minutes

There’s an interesting question that’s been bandied about in forums, chat rooms, etc. for that last year or so, and without a truly satisfactory consensus. That question is…

What IS “Web 2.0″ anyway?

I’m certainly not going to be able to give a comprehensive answer to that question here today, but I AM going to post a VERY cool video done by Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University, that I think is going to knock your SOCKS off.

It is fun, fast-paced, and (like I said) very cool. At the same time, though…it also kinda blew my mind and made me tear up a bit.

Watch it below and tell me what YOU think! :D

(here’s a little “viral marketing” tidbit about the power of YouTube, as well…that video has almost 3 million views!)
